Isla Bolanos & Isla Gamez

Enjoy a great day exploring the gorgeous blue waters and Islands of the Chiriquí gulf. One of our local captains will take you by boat to Isla Bolaños for some great snorkeling. coral reefs, many colorful fish and once in a while a giant green turtle!

During the boat trip there is a very good change to encounter Dolphins and Whales (august - november only!), flying fish and many different ocean birds.

After snorkeling the trip goes on to the near by island of Gamez…a white sand beach, great for swimming and relaxing in the calm, warm tropical ocean.

Not included but for sure recommended is to ask us to pack a picnic style lunch! Choose from our excellent lunch menu what you desire and we bring it to the beach... ready to be enjoyed in the shade of one of the many palm trees, when you are hungry !

Sport Fishing

When you like to fish, you came to the right place!!!

Boca Chica is located on Panama's Pacific Coast with its world famous fishing grounds that include the Hannibal Bank, Montuosa Island and Isla Ladrones! These areas are world renowned for catching huge fish.

Inshore and offshore species include: Blue & Black Marlin, as well as large Yellow Fin Tuna, Sailfish, Wahoo, Dorado (Mahi-mahi), Roosterfish, Cero Mackerel, Snook, Cubera Snapper, Mullet Snapper, Corbina, Grouper, Amberjack, Jack Crevalle, Blue-Fin Trevally and more.

p.s. As anybody would with a sustainable & ecological mindset, we strongly encourage our guests only to kill what they can eat and to 'catch & release' the rest of these magnificent animals that you might hook!

Our amazing chef will gladly cook your catch to your liking!

We offer both Inshore and Offshore fishing:

Inshore

Inshore fishing takes place in the waters around Boca Chica and can be done per hour, half day or full day and boats carry up to four people. We offer 3 options for this type of fishing:

Local Panga

This is with our own Boat or similar, a very nice 17 feet Panga with a 40 hp motor and almost a full roof for shade! Our captain is a very experienced fisherman who has been boating & fishing his entire life in these waters and so knows his fishing spots! Includes equipment (drinks and/or food available).
price: $ 40 per hour with a minimum of 3 hours.

Capitán Murphy

A 17 feet Panga with 1 Yamaha engine of 115 HP. Includes equipment, box lunch and drinks.
price: $ 200 half day - $ 300 full day.

Offshore

Offshore fishing takes you to the islands of Isla Secas, Isla Ladrones, Montuosa and/or the Hannibal bank, where you can also world class deep sea fishing! Maximum of 4 people per boat unless specified differently.

Capitán Mario

Fishing is offered aboard the Geisha, a 30' Almar Sounder with twin Yamaha 150 horsepower four stroke outboards. The boat is comfortable, seaworthy and has an access ladder for getting in and out of the water, fresh water rinse, a marine bathroom and plenty of shade.

Included in the price are the boat, captain, mate (if needed), fishing and snorkeling equipment, and gas (above $5 per gallon, an additional charge will apply). Cash payment only

Islas Paridas: leave around 8:30am motoring gently out to the Islas Paridas archipelago, sometimes fishing for mackeral along the way. You then spend the morning trolling, popper casting, or bottom fishing with live bait near rocks for mackeral, rooster fish, snapper, jacks and grouper. Lunch break is usually taken on board anchored in a protected bay near the beach at Isla Gamez or Isla Bolanos. Both beaches are good for protected snorkeling if someone wants to dive in!
Price: $ 550 for the day , maximum 8 guests.

Islas Secas: leave around 7:00 or 8:00am and motors less than an hour to the islands. You can troll for mahi-mahi for a while or fish near rocks for red snapper, then can anchor near a protected reef, beach or ocean rock for snorkeling. Lunch break is usually taken near a nice swimming beach. The afternoon is flexible, but can be more and different types of fishing, snorkeling or just a leisurely boat tour of the islands. You usually head back around 3pm and are back at the dock by 4pm. June through December is humpback whale watching season. Mahi-mahi fishing is best November through March. Dolphins, turtles, sea birds, schools of fish and beautiful islands vistas are year round.
Price: $ 775 for the boat for the day, maximum 6 guests.

Islas Ladrones: leave around 6:00 or 7:00am, you might pause to try jigging for live bait inshore and then motor a little over an hour to the islands. We can troll for wahoo from May to December or tuna and mahi-mahi the rest of the year. We can try popper casting, jigging or bottom fishing with live bait near rocks for snapper, jacks and grouper. Lunch break is usually taken on board either out in the open ocean or anchored in a protected bay, followed by more fishing in the afternoon. We usually head back around 3pm and are back at the dock by 4:30pm, there is a nice swimming beach on the way back to the dock.
Price: $ 775 for the boat for the day, maximum 6 guests.

Montuosa and Hannibal Bank: leave around 6:00 or 7:00am, you might pause to try jigging for live bait inshore and then motor two hours to Montuosa. We normally first troll for live Bonita, the preferred bait fish for Marlin and large Yellow Fin Tuna. You can also try popper casting, jigging or bottom fishing with live bait near rocks for snapper, jacks and grouper. Lunch break is usually taken on board in the open ocean. We usually head back around 2:30 pm and are back at the dock by 5:00pm.
Price: $ 1000 for the boat for the day, maximum 4 fishermen.

Isla Coiba: leave around 6:30am, motors two hours to Coiba, sometimes fishing along the way, then check in at the ranger station on the north end of the island. We then spend the day hiking in the jungle, snorkeling or combing the beaches, have lunch and then work our way back arriving back in Boca Chica no later than 4:30pm. It's a long boat ride there and back, but Coiba is an exceptionally beautiful place and a day trip is a good way to get acquainted with what the island has to offer.
Price: The boat costs $ 1000 for the day which includes the boat's entry fee into the park. Clients have to bring their passports ($20) or cedulas (national ID card) ($5) and pay for the day use of the park. Maximum 6 guests.

Capitán Juan

Will take you where you want to go; Isla Secas, Isla Ladrones or to Montuosa. He has a 32 feet Panga with 2 engines Yamaha 220 HP - Includes box lunch, drinks, equipment, gas and capatain.
price: $ 150 per hour - $ 800 + gasoline all day.

Capitán Olivier

You can choose to go to Isla Ladrones or to Isla Secas or go further out to the Hannibal Bank or to Isla Montuosa. He has a 25 feet boat with 2 engines Suzuki of 140 HP each one. Includes food & drinks and gasoline. The equipment is not included.
price: $ 880 to Ladrones or Secas - $1.100 to Montuosa or the Hannibal Bank.

Capitán Murphy

You can choose to go to Isla Ladrones or to Isla Secas or go further out to the Hannibal Bank or to Isla Montuosa. He has a 29 feet boat with 2 engines Yamaha 300 HP each. Includes box lunch, drinks, equipment and gasoline.

Panamá Sport Fishing Lodge

Offers all day ishing trips to Montuosa or Hannibal Bank with a large 35 feet boat with center console and twin 250 HP four stroke. Includes lunch box, drinks, equipment, gasoline.

Panamá Big Game

Full day fishing at Montuosa or Hannibal Bank with a 33-foot boat with console sport fishing, powered by Twin Four Stroke Yamahas outboard cruises of 350 HP. Includes lunch box, drinks, equipment, gasoline.

Explore the Mangroves, Mountains and Beaches of Isla Boca Brava by horse! An unforgettable ride in an incredible place!

This splendid 2 hour horseback ride starts by a short boat ride to the beach where the horses will be waiting. From here the experienced guide will lead you through the mangroves and up the mountains to one of the highest points of Boca Brava. From here you have awesome views of the surrounding ocean, numerous islands, including 'Isla las secas' and the main land.

The ride continues through pasture land, jungle and finishing of at the beach, where more experienced riders can take their horse for a run and gallop on the tropical sands of this beautiful Island. The ride ends right back at the hotel.

Lymph fluid moves slowly without aid of its own pump, inactivity can seriously restrict its flow. Muscular contraction through exercise and deep breathing is the primary means by which our lymph circulates, but lymphatic massage and drainage provide another helpful option.

Scuba Diving

The area offers fantastic scuba diving where divers will find plenty of everything in our tropical waters, whales, dolphins, sharks, black marlin and turtles to volcanic formations.

The dives are awesome around the islands of Las Ladrones and Islas Secas, where the water very clear and the sea life the richest.

Visibility in these unspoiled waters can be as much as 60-80 feet or up to 25 meters!

The diving season is practically year round, with the best season between December and April.

Mangrove Tour

Departing from the hotel by boat its just a small trip to where the Mangrove eco system begins.

Ones in the mangroves, your guide will show you the grand significance of this eco-system and discover the beauty and the great variety of flora & fauna that this estuary offer.

During this tour there is a good change to see monkeys, (sea) birds, rackoons, crabs and other animals. The duration of the tour is approximatly 1 hour.

Surfing

The beaches and ocean around Boca Chica and Boca Brava offer some awesome Panama Surf Spots! Surfers of all levels, from advanced to beginners, can enjoy a day of surfing the waves of our gorgeous white sand beaches.

Beginners surf lessons teach the basics of board handling, standing up and riding on a local sandy beach.

Intermediate surfers get the benefit of a guided surf session in one of the local breaks. Advanced surfers have a chance to go to Isla Silva de Afuera, whe you will find a variety of world class surf breaks!

As for surfing we offer the following options:

Panga

You will be picked up here at Hotel Cala Mia and be taken to one of the local beaches, where the guide will give you brief instructions, before sharig his secret surf spot!

Price: $ 50 per hour one person (2 hour min) - extra (non) surfer: $ 20 p/p
Includes small boat to local beach, guide & surf board.
Beginner lessons add $ 25 p/p

El Jefe

Travel through the Gulf of Chiriquí in the large covered boat, El Jefe - complete with hammocks, iPod, connection, cooler and chairs - to one of our local surf spots.

Ones arrived, the surfers have to peddle/swim to the beach, where the surfing begins.

Non-surfing guests can watch from a hammock on the boat or swim and walking on the long white sand beach with Tropical Palm trees!

The trip all together takes about 3 - 3.5 hours and will take you through a very nice part of the Chiriquí gulf.

Surfing at this beach is always great for beginners and intermediate surfers because of its sandy bottom. Advanced surfers can have a great time too, but will depend a bit more on the tide & swell for that particular day.

Isla Silva de Afuera

For advanced surfers we offer one of Panama's most famous surf breaks, Isla Silva de Afuera is located an hour and a half boat trip from Boca Chica and is home to a variety of world class surf waves on and around the island. Travel to Silva in the large covered boat, "El Jefe" and enjoy a full day of surfing. Lunch and drinks included. (6 hour trip).

Whale Watching

The humpback whales choose the part of the gulf around Hotel Cala Mia to learn their whale babies how to swim and dive. This happens each year, in the period August to November when the Humpback Whales visit the Boca Chica area and they love to put on a show!

The national marine park "Golfo de Chiriqui" protects the marine life and coastal area of the part from David to Boca Chica in Panama.

In a small boat with experience captain you depart from he hotel looking for humpback whales and dolphins inside and around the National Park. Many times being fortunate enough to float quietly besides these beautiful giants, while swimming alongside with their whale baby!

The best time to take this tour is during whale's season which is from August to November.

On board is snorkeling equipment to enjoy the coral around Bolaños Island. Here we can find colorful fish, sponges, coral, mollusk, green turtles, puffer fish and other creatures which live in these tropical waters.

Hiking Boca Bava

Hotel Cala Mia is located on Isla Boca Brava, an island of approximately 3800 hectares or 9300 acres. The island consist of mix of mangroves, jungle, pasture land and tropical beaches and houses a variety of flora & wildlife, ranging from howler monkeys, crocodiles, raccoons, all kinds of birds and even small wild cats!

The hikes are accompanied by one of our indigenous workers who was born & raised on the island and knows almost every corner of it. What he lacks in English he makes up in spirit & spoting of wild animals!

We offer two sets of hikes; a short one and a long one.

The Lookout hike;

This hike is about 1 hour and takes you from the hotel along the beach and up the hill. Passing though mangroves, jungle and some more cultivated land, here is a very good change to see monkeys and tropical birds.

Gently working your way up to one of the higher points of Boca Brava Island, you will get to the lookout from which you have an incredible view; the blue waters of the gulf of Chiriquí, tropical islands, jungles and even the Baru volcano. A sight not soon to be forgotten!

After the lookout you continue down, passing beautiful wild flowers, trees and other flora, until you get back to the hotel.

The Boca Brava Hike;

This hike takes you through a large part of the island. Starting at the hotel, passing the mangroves you start up hill through the jungle and passing the many farms that make up a large part of the island. About half way through you pass a very nice beache, where you could take swim, if you want!

A unique experience, exploring up close such a diverse eco system and seldomly visited areas by tourists. Plenty of chance to encounter wild monkeys, birds and colorful flora.

The hike is about 3 hours and ends at restaurant Boca Brava where you can enjoy a nice cold drink and/or a tasty lunch. After you are done the hotel taxi boat will pick you up (please allow us some time to arrive) and bring you back to Cala Mia.
